TYPE 1: Location & Assessment Survey
The surveyor would locate and assess materials that could contain
asbestos. No samples would be taken on this type of survey, and any
materials that could contain asbestos are presumed or strongly presumed
to be asbestos. All materials are to be treated as asbestos, even
if they are thought not to be. An assessment is made of each suspect
material to determine it’s overall risk potential. The survey
would comply with current regulations and determine weather there
is a need for further sampling. This type of survey is soon to be
phased out, to be replaced with a desktop study and site visit to
the proposed survey area.
TYPE 2: Standard Sampling & Assessment Survey
The survey will be carried out by means of visual inspection and
subsequent sampling of materials the surveyor suspects of containing
asbestos. The samples taken will be chosen as being representative
of the material under investigation. Any visually similar materials
should be regarded as being of uniform composition.
Each sample taken will be given a unique reference number, which
will be recorded on the sample bag and where appropriate on a label
applied to the sample point. This reference number will also be recorded
in the report for easy cross-referencing. Where possible a photograph
will be taken of every sample point and included in the report.
If an area cannot be accessed, then it should be presumed that asbestos
containing materials are present.
TYPE 3: Full Access Sampling & Identification Survey
This type of survey should be carried out before any demolition
or major refurbishment works take place as an extension to any type
2 surveys that have been carried out. This type of survey will require
full access to all areas and will result in considerable damage to
decoration, fixtures and fittings; it is therefore best that this
type of survey be carried when the premises have been vacated.
Again the survey will be carried out by means of visual inspection
and subsequent sampling of suspect materials.
The sampling strategy and recording of analysis results will be carried
out in the same manner as a type 2 examination.
Photographic records will be taken and included in the report to
assist cross-referencing.
If an area cannot be accessed then it must be presumed that asbestos
materials are present until further investigation can be carried
out.
